Chapter 613 Unexpected Events
Chapter 613 Unexpected Events
Mikoto Uchiha did not participate in this minor argument. Her gaze passed over the two bickering individuals and landed on the young couple in the distance.
Not far away, Sasuke and Mai were buying takoyaki from a street stall. The two of them stood by the stall, eating and talking. After they finished eating, they threw the bamboo skewers into the trash can provided by the stall owner.
Then, without hugging, without holding hands, without any gesture that could be defined as "ambiguous," they simply nodded to each other, one saying, "Then I'll go this way," and the other saying, "Okay, see you tomorrow." Then the two slowly walked in two completely different directions, step by step, until their figures completely disappeared at the end of the street as dusk deepened.
Mikoto watched this scene and sighed heavily. To be honest, she was extremely anxious. She and Fugaku were both extremely satisfied with Uzumaki Mai, so satisfied that they wanted to carve the words "Daughter-in-law reserved" on the doorplate.
She didn't believe a single word of the rumors circulating in the village. Every time she heard people say she was some kind of calamity, some kind of bad luck, she felt an urge to roll up her sleeves and confront them. Why was such a lovely child being treated like this? She and Fugaku had never wavered.
She had considered proposing marriage herself... but let Fugaku handle it.
It's not that I don't want to go, but Fugaku has a good temper and is gentle and kind. He would definitely be more respectable than her in proposing marriage. Yes, that's right, that's exactly it.
However, this idea was rejected very early on.
Because Minato Namikaze had said this to her and Fugaku a long time ago, and he said it very solemnly. Minato said that as a father, he felt that he had let his daughter down in far too many ways. He had failed to protect her when she was very young and had failed to give her a normal childhood without being treated coldly. So now the only thing he could do was not to interfere in his daughter's life in any way.
No matter who his daughter chooses in the future, who she is with, or even if she never gets married, he, as her father, will absolutely respect that choice.
Minato spoke in his usual gentle tone, but Mikoto could hear the determination beneath that gentleness. In other words, the path of arranging a marriage for her son was blocked by the rules.
If the man's own father doesn't agree, you can't just barge in with the betrothal gifts, can you?
Mikoto turned her gaze away from the empty end of the street, then looked at the two people behind her. Naruto was rubbing his temples with a helpless expression, and Satsuki was puffing out his cheeks in a huff.
Mikoto saw this, then cleared her throat, preparing to call the two quarreling young couple home.
...Anyway, it's just a coincidence. We'll be back around dinner time, so why don't you all come over for dinner? She mentally rehearsed this sentence beforehand.
She opened her mouth, ready to say those words.
"boom!!!"
A deafening explosion suddenly erupted in the distant streets.
Immediately following was the sound of shattering glass, the terrified screams of villagers, and the chaotic footsteps, which spread rapidly from afar in all directions.
"What happened?!" Naruto whirled around and saw a column of black smoke rising in the distance. He turned his head, his gaze searching for anyone who could answer the question.
But all around them were panicked people fleeing, and several young ninjas were running in the opposite direction—not to meet the enemy, but to evacuate the crowd.
Naruto was about to run towards the pillar of smoke ahead to get a better look.
"Hey! You!" A hand suddenly reached out from the side and grabbed his arm tightly. Naruto turned around and saw a Konoha Chunin he didn't recognize, his forehead covered in sweat and his breathing rapid and disordered.
"What are you doing over there! This is no joke!" The chunin glared at him, his voice urgent and sharp. "Get out of there right now!"
"Excuse me, what exactly happened up ahead?" Naruto was not intimidated by the other party's imposing manner; instead, he grabbed the Chunin's wrist.
"What else could it be! It's definitely Akatsuki! Those bastards, they've finally attacked Konoha! Stop asking! Get out of here! Staying here will only cause trouble!"
