Chapter 275 - 273: A Well-Groomed Little Sister
Chapter 275 - 273: A Well-Groomed Little Sister
「 Portia. 」
Silas Grant stepped out of the elevator. Simon Adler, who had been waiting outside, fell into step beside him. "My dad asked if you have time to come over for dinner tonight."
Usually, it was the Adler Family who went to the Hughes Family’s estate to celebrate holidays and have dinner with the old man.
But things were different now. The old man was gone.
"You’re all alone anyway, so it’s a good chance to take a break."
Seeing Silas Grant hold out his hand, Eric handed him his phone and whispered, "No calls have come in."
This was Silas Grant’s private phone. Not many people knew the number, and Mia Grant was one of them.
Silas Grant acted as if he hadn’t heard, his fingers scrolling through his contacts and then checking his messages.
Complete silence.
Simon Adler noticed this and couldn’t help but smirk. "News of the old man’s passing got out early this morning. And since she’s with Kian Keller, there’s no way she doesn’t know."
The implication was clear: for her to not even think of calling or texting him at a time like this showed just how little of a place he held in her heart.
Silas Grant glanced sideways at him, his gaze sharp. "You seem to be paying a lot of attention to her lately."
Simon Adler’s expression was casual as he smiled. "You’re just being too sensitive."
"If you keep being this insecure, she’ll have you wrapped around her little finger sooner or later. That’s not a good sign."
Simon Adler pushed open the office door. "Take it easy. It’s not worth it over a woman. What would people say if word got out?"
It sounded like he hadn’t changed at all.
He still had the same attitude toward Mia Grant, seeing her as a troublemaker.
"To be honest, if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have worked with her this time."
Simon Adler walked in beside him. "After interacting with her for a few days last time, I realized she’s a lot like you. She seems warm and friendly, but in reality, her heart is as hard as stone."
"Is this the ’good little sister’ you raised yourself? She’s really mastered your essence."
Silas Grant sat down behind his desk, placing his phone to the side without looking at it again.
He calmly raised his gaze to the man across from him, who was still making sarcastic remarks.
However, he felt no stirrings of anger whatsoever.
In fact, it was quite the opposite.
His gaze returned to the documents on his desk. He picked up a pen and unhurriedly signed his name. "I won’t be coming over tonight."
"Do you have other plans?"
"Hayes is still at the old estate, so it’s not like the house is empty."
At the mention of Hayes Hughes, Simon Adler smiled again. "You two brothers are presenting a united front now. Should we be thanking Mia Grant for that?"
"He’s going back to Jynsia after the funeral, right? What about you? What are your plans?"
"We’ll see."
Silas Grant seemed completely focused on his work, his answers to Simon’s questions extremely perfunctory.
Simon Adler knew Silas Grant was holding back.
Anyone else would have lost their patience by now, himself included.
He sighed inwardly.
’As expected, even after all these years, I’m still no match for Silas Grant.’
’Only Silas could endure this kind of loneliness at a time like this.’
’No texts, no calls, not a single attempt to reach out.’
’His self-control is truly enviable.’
Simon Adler leaned back in his chair, clasped his hands over his stomach, and gazed at the last rays of sunlight on the ceiling, beginning to contemplate the meaning of life.
Silas Grant finished signing the documents at hand, and Eric took them out.
Once Eric was gone, he looked across and saw Simon Adler staring blankly into space.
"You seem to space out easily lately."
Simon Adler looked over. "Oh? Maybe I just haven’t been sleeping well."
"Something on your mind?" Silas Grant asked casually.
Simon Adler was surprised by his sharpness.
He could feel that their earlier conversation had already dispelled Silas Grant’s suspicions of him.
But now, at the slightest disturbance, Silas Grant would subconsciously test him.
That was Silas Grant for you—he’d always let you lower your guard before striking back when you least expected it.
"I’ve just been a bit tired lately." Simon Adler rubbed the back of his neck. "Sigh, it’s already the end of the year, and now all this has happened. Of course, no matter how busy I am, it’s nothing compared to you."
"Luckily, with Miles Sinclair stepping in this time, it saved a lot of trouble."
With Miles Sinclair’s sudden intervention, it was only natural for Silas Grant to take power.
The group immediately convened a board meeting.
Tomorrow, Silas Grant would officially take office.
Simon Adler changed the subject. "By the way, Carla Sinclair called me this morning. She wants to talk to you."
"No time."
Simon Adler replied, "She’s Mia Grant’s sister now. What if she doesn’t want to talk about Miles Sinclair?"
Silas Grant made no exceptions; his answer was the same.
Simon Adler raised an eyebrow.
Simon Adler had something to attend to and was called away before long.
The office was quiet for a while. Silas Grant picked up the phone on his desk and checked the time.
When Eric entered, he heard a rhythmic tapping. Looking over, he saw Silas Grant’s index finger drumming lightly on the desk.
He was thinking.
Eric made some noise as he came in, and it was too late to halt his steps. Silas Grant looked over at him.
Eric subconsciously straightened his back, tightening his grip on the schedule in his hand.
Their eyes met. As if he had keenly observed something, Eric glanced down at the schedule and said, "Mr. Grant, tonight... Mr. Chadwick from Ascendia had something come up and canceled the dinner."
"So, would you like to return to the old estate or make other arrangements?"
"Mr. Lynch from Jynsia called last week, wanting to discuss the new Norchester project with you in person. How about tonight?"
"It’ll be a bit of a tough trip for you, but you can be back tomorrow morning."
"At this hour, we can still get the flight plan approved."
After speaking, Eric carefully observed Silas Grant’s expression. After what seemed like an eternity, the man’s lips curved into a slight smile, and a few specks of amusement appeared in the dark eyes behind his glasses.
’That meant he agreed.’
Eric returned a knowing smile. "I’ll make the arrangements right away."
"You don’t need to come with me. Get off early today, and just pick me up at the airport tomorrow morning."
Eric was slightly taken aback. "Thank you, Mr. Grant!"
Everyone in the president’s office had been working around the clock lately, especially him, the executive assistant. He felt like a spinning top.
’It’s true what they say: when the boss is in a good mood, everyone else can relax.’
"Do you have any career plans for the future?" Silas Grant asked offhandedly.
Eric thought for a moment and said, "I’ll follow your arrangements. But personally, I still hope to stay by your side."
His current position, while nominally an executive assistant, was actually on par with the head of a branch company.
Unlike others, he was also part of the management.
Now that Silas Grant was taking over, he had new options as well.
It was clear Silas Grant wanted to post him somewhere else.
But he currently had no intention of leaving Portia.
Silas Grant smiled. "Are you sure it’s not because you have a girlfriend now?"
Eric laughed and scratched his head. "Well, that’s part of the reason."
He wasn’t young anymore. He had been with Silas Grant since graduation, so busy with work all these years that he never had time for romance.
Now that he’d finally found someone, he didn’t want a long-distance relationship.
’Long-distance relationships never end well. Isn’t Silas Grant a perfect example?’
—
Late that night, Mia Grant was sitting alone on the living room rug, watching a movie.
Outside the window, snowflakes fluttered down. The fire in the hearth flickered across her face, leaping and dancing freely.
When a knock sounded at the door, Mia Grant thought her dinner delivery had arrived.
She used the sofa to push herself up and went to open the door.
